What IS the Gospel?

Sometimes the actions of teaching and witnessing necessitate our truncation or paraphrasing of God's Word.  This is dangerous, albeit important ground to tread.  If you had to state the essence of the gospel in one statement, or one paragraph, what would you say?  Is it as simple as what one scholar wrote, "God saves people?"  Or is that an oversimplification?  Don't you think an explanation of the gospel should at least mention Jesus?  Well then, what exactly about Jesus should it mention?
