The Swing of Things

"How's it going?"

"Oh, just gettin' back into the swing of things after the holidays."

This has been my primary conversation of the last couple of days.  Are you into the "swing of things" yet?  I think that is an appropriate metaphor.  Our lives have a certain rhythm to them.  For most of us each day, each week is very similar.  But traditionally, this is the time each year when we pause for just a moment and evaluate.  After the holidays, we take a breath and ask, "How do I want this year to be different from last year?"

So I've been checking my rhythm, taking my pulse, evaluating my life, and here are a few things that I've decided to change.

1. I want to be more "on purpose" in 2010.  I want to plan my days and my weeks.  As I get older, I hold time more valuable.

2.  I want to make a bigger difference in 2010.  I want to dream some big dreams and get them done.

3.  I want to "go away" more often.  In order to do the previous two, I'm going to have to get away from my "swing of things" more often.  I need to take more time to be with the Lord in prayer and solitude. (Luke 4:1)

4. I want to love better.  Starting with my family and my church family, I want to be better relationally.  I want to be a better husband, father, and friend.

So there are some of the tempo changes I'm going to try for in 2010.  How about you?
